Report Card Information
Tremendous amounts of energy and thought go into preparing and writing report cards. Teachers spend a great deal of time assessing and reporting how each child is progressing along their learning journey.
Assessment consists of a variety of conversation, observation, process and product-based tasks, over time. These multiple forms of assessment determine the extent and level to which learner outcomes from the curriculum have been demonstrated by your child.
CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum:
- Fall 2022 start:
- Mathematics (K-3)
- English Language Arts and Literature (K-3)
- Physical Education and Wellness (K-3)
- Fall 2023 start:
- Science (K-3)
In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well.
Rubrics are clearly outlined sets of criteria that explain what a learner should know and be able to do. Throughout a learning cycle, a teacher will use a variety of assessments (rubrics, tests, performance-based tasks, observations, feedback, conversations, quizzes, etc.) At the end of the cycle, students and teachers assess progress in reference to the criteria, and decide on next steps in learning. A teacher then uses the most recent evidence of achievement to determine an indicator mark for the report card.
Report card comments will look a bit different this year. Comments have been streamlined to clearly convey what a student has learned and where growth is needed with regard to the curricular, grade level outcomes and to reflect the new curriculum that is in place.
Should you have any questions at all, please connect with your child’s teacher for clarifications.
Continuous Registration
Please be aware that existing Banting and Best School students are automatically registered for the 2024-25 school year. This is also the case for Grade 3 students transitioning to their designated next school, Sherwood School. Registrations are considered “continuous” meaning no actions are required on the part of families. If your child is NOT attending Banting and Best School or Sherwood School next year, please contact the office as soon as possible. Early notification helps us to transition your child to their next school and helps us make more accurate plans for our school in the new school year.
For students not yet enrolled with us, for example, new Kindergarten students or students new to the area, registration has begun for the 2024-25 year and is ongoing. Please see our website at https://school.cbe.ab.ca/school/BantingAndBest/Pages/default.aspx or www.cbe.ab.ca to register.
